Students Learn Cutting-Edge Agriscience and Animal Science Skills
-
Liberty Tech Advanced Agriculture, Food, Natural Resources & Technology Innovation Institute offers nontraditional schedules, a learner-paced curriculum, and work-based learning opportunities to prepare students for post-secondary education and careers in high-demand occupations.
Liberty Acres, also known as the Liberty Tech Delta Faucet Agriculture Project, consists of 4.4 acres of land owned by Delta Faucet. Delta Faucet, in turn, has generously allowed the students to use the land for agricultural coursework. Students have completed Phases 1 and 2 of the project, which includes building raised growing beds and high tunnel greenhouses. Through the Tennessee Innovative High Schools Models Grant, Liberty Tech will be able to purchase a tractor to begin growing row crops as a part of the project's Phase 3. The final phase of the project will include solar energy.
In addition to growing crops, students will experience drone technology as they learn how to monitor the crops at Liberty Acres without having to leave the classroom. Agricultural drone technology provides Liberty Tech students with cutting-edge opportunities while they expand their knowledge of plant science and agronomy.
Liberty Tech students with an Animal Science focus participate in small animal care. In addition to their coursework in veterinary science, the students have an opportunity to work directly with animals through the program's business, Crusader Cuts.
Liberty Tech’s award-winning greenhouse program also provides produce for the school’s cafeteria and supplies items for Liberty’s culinary arts program. Any additional vegetables are sold to other Jackson-Madison County Schools' cafeterias.
